HOW BREATHWORK AFFECTS OUR AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

 

    There are two main types of nerves in the autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic.

    In the western world, we are taught to seek pleasure and avoid pain. This is largely because our sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the "fight or flight" response that allows us to escape dangerous situations. However, what we don't realize is that the sympathetic nervous system also causes stress and anxiety. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the "rest and digest" response that allows us to relax and heal. When we breathwork, we are able to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and achieve a state of relaxation.

CAUTION

     It is important with any kind of rhythmic breathing that you are aware of how you are feeling throughout the process. You may feel some tingling, a light headed feeling , energy surging through your body. These sensations are normal when practicing breathwork. If the feelings become a bit overwhelming or disorienting, STOP IMMEDIATELY! Breathwork beginners should gradually increase the intensity of their breathing.

FOR BEGINNERS

     It is recommended you practice breathwork with a partner. If that is not possible, please find a seat with a secure back, lean against a wall or lay down while practicing.

INSTRUCTIONS

 This meditation is simple. It requires less than 5 minutes of your time. 

I recommend practicing this meditation twice a day; in the morning when you wake up  and in the evening before you are ready to rest. 

We want to create a new habit. Habits take time and consistency. I recommend practicing this breathwork exercise everyday for at least 30 days.
